How It Works

How Final Expense Insurance Actually Works

A clear, plain-English guide for Florida seniors and their families.

What is final expense insurance?

Final expense insurance is a small whole life insurance policy designed specifically to cover end-of-life costs — funeral, burial or cremation, outstanding medical bills, and small debts.

Unlike term life, it never expires as long as premiums are paid. Unlike traditional whole life, the application is simple, the coverage amounts are smaller, and there is no medical exam.

Final expense vs term life vs whole life

Term life covers a fixed period (10–30 years) and is typically harder to qualify for at older ages.

Whole life covers your entire lifetime but often requires a medical exam and higher premiums.

Final expense is a streamlined whole life policy with benefit amounts from $5,000 up to $100,000 (maximum depends on your age), no medical exam, and senior-friendly underwriting.

Who qualifies?

Florida residents ages 50–85 (sometimes up to 89). Most health conditions are accepted, including diabetes, high blood pressure, COPD, heart disease, and history of stroke.

If you've been declined for other life insurance, guaranteed-issue plans accept all applicants in the eligible age range.

Simplified Issue vs Guaranteed Issue

Simplified Issue: A short list of yes/no health questions. Lower premiums, full death benefit from day one.

Guaranteed Issue: No health questions, accepted regardless of medical history. Slightly higher premiums and a 2-year graded benefit period.

How are premiums calculated?

Four factors: age at application, coverage amount, gender, and tobacco use. Once issued, your premium is locked for life.

What the death benefit covers — and doesn't

Covers: funeral and burial, cremation, casket or urn, cemetery costs, headstone, outstanding medical bills, credit card balances, and any final expenses your family wishes to settle.

Does not cover: investments, retirement income, or large outstanding mortgage balances. For those, a different product is appropriate.
